Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing these medications must be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to original weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

People who have come off the jabs describe a sudden return of cravings.

"It was like something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
